Bulgaria introduces VAT relief in the COVID-19 crisis

Countries around the world are beginning to respond to the global crisis caused by Covid-19. They are starting to introduce tax breaks to support an economy already hit by the crisis. We present this information below and we will update it on a regular basis. We will also take into account these reductions when submitting the VAT declaration.

Latest updates regarding Bulgaria:

  • 29 VII – proposes to extend the 9% reduced VAT rate to: tour operators; gyms and sports facilities; for alcohol in restaurants and cafes; 

  • 11 VI – onfirms the reduction of the VAT rate for catering, cafes and restaurants from 20% to 9% for food and non-alcoholic beverages until December 31, 2020. It also lowers the VAT rate for e-books and published books.

  • May 8 – Bulgaria proposes to lower the VAT rate for restaurant, cafe and hotel services from 20% to 9% from June 1 to December 31, 2020. Then the rate will revert to 20% in 2021.

  • April 2 – Bulgarian tax authorities will not extend VAT settlement deadlines until further notice to help companies fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Follow live global company VAT tracker Tick concerning the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Bulgarian government is likely to halt ongoing VAT investigations and other tax investigations and assessments in the short term.
